Revolt in France, Macron cancels visit to Berlin
The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has postponed his visit to Germany, scheduled from tomorrow to July 5, due to the situation in his country.This was announced by Cerstin Garmelin, spokesman for the German president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
The official said that the two heads of state had a telephone conversation today. Macron and Steinmeier discussed the situation in France, where clashes between protesters and law enforcement agencies continue.
Steinmeier expressed regret at Macron's decision but said he fully understood him in light of the protests, the spokeswoman added. Steinmeier is "following developments very closely" in France."He hopes that the violence in the streets [of French cities] will be stopped as soon as possible and that peace in society will be restored again," Garmelin said.
