Explosions occurred in several large cities, and Sana'a airport was subjected to massive bombing. US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the operation a response to Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea. On January 19, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin announced the start of an operation to protect the Red Sea from attacks by the Houthis on civilian ships carrying cargo from trading companies.
