Six hospitals in the city of Derna, Libya, are starting to provide services again after the heavy floods
The health minister of the government based in eastern Libya has announced that services have started to be provided again in six hospitals in the city of Derna, one week after the hurricane and bad floods hit the eastern parts of the country. Minister Othman Abdul Jalil has told the journalists in the city that the Emergency Committee has succeeded in opening six hospitals in the city of Derna for surgery and in addition, these hospitals are currently using modern equipment in their services. The official added that ordinary citizens, rescuers and volunteers in Derna have all been vaccinated to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Other measures taken are the creation of a committee to provide psychological support to flood victims in the city which is among the areas badly affected by the floods. The city of Derna is 1,300 kilometers east of the capital Tripoli.
On the 10th of September, Hurricane Daniel caused the worst floods ever to occur in Libya in decades. So far more than 5,500 people have been confirmed dead and another 10,000 are still missing. That is according to the official statistics of the Libyan government. The floods caused by hurricane Daniel have caused a great disaster in Libya. Libya is rich in oil but does not have a strong central government and for many years now it has been ruled by two rival governments in the east and the west. This situation has come after the overthrow of the regime of the former leader of the country, Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. At the same time, the special representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Libya has emphasized the importance of increasing and accelerating joint efforts to rid Libya of the disaster the great floods that hit the eastern parts of the country last week. Abdoulaye Bathily said this yesterday Sunday when he met with the Head of the Libyan Governing Council, Mohamed Menfi in the capital Tripoli, where he offered condolences on behalf of the United Nations following the floods that caused a major disaster in the north African country.
