Opposition parties in the Greek-administered region of Southern Cyprus (GCASC) have expressed dissatisfaction with the increased presence of the US military, pointing to visits to the country's ports by Washington submarines in light of the ongoing situation in the Gaza Strip. A US submarine that arrived on the island on Friday was met with opposition protests.

The statement of the main opposition party of the extreme left wing of the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL), has indicated an increase in the series of US submarines heading to the South of Cyprus and accused the country's government of bringing the island into serious security tensions by allowing forces foreign military to gather on the island.

One part of AKEL's statement said: "The difficult and worrying environment, the war in this region provokes a very serious risk to the security of all nations and peoples of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Our entire region is facing the risk of wildfires. a spreading war with incalculable negative consequences".

The opposition party of South Cyprus has emphasized by saying: "in this context, the continued concentration of American military forces on our island, inside and outside the British bases, increases the risk and concern".

While AKEL's statement emphasizes that, from the party's point of view, South Cyprus is not to be made a center for foreign forces but to be a bridge for peace and to pass humanitarian aid, it has asked the Greek government in Cyprus to take action in accordance with that direction. ../
