Swedish Court of Appeal approves life sentence for Iranian detainee

The Swedish Court of Appeal has ruled that the life sentence handed down to Hamid Nouri, an Iranian detained in the country, was appropriate for his continued violation of human rights standards. Hameed Nouri was arrested by the country's security forces at the airport on November 9, 2019, when he visited Sweden , and is currently in prison . Swedish prosecutors had indicted him on suspicion of being involved in an incident that occurred 34 years ago in Iran, based on a complaint filed mainly by members of the anti-Iranian group MKO Monerfeghin . On Tuesday, the Swedish Court of Appeal ruled that the life sentence handed down by the Stockholm District Court against Nouri was valid for "violations of international law and murder". Numerous international lawyers, including Mr. Nouri's lawyers, have said on numerous occasions that the court process concerning him has been politicized and is proceeding in a way that is outside the standards of not only international law but also Swedish domestic law. I have stated. Regarding this matter, Mr. Nouri's son Majeed said, ``My father's trial was a kind of demonstration. The media was silent, and justice was obliterated in the process.' ' Mr Majeed added: ``The unjust actions that the Swedish courts have carried out with respect to my father, such as his 49 months in solitary confinement, are such that even the Swedish public defender has criticized the process and the response.・It was enough to warrant a protest."
