Delegates from the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), countries that contribute to peacekeeping forces in Somalia and international partners, yesterday Tuesday completed a one-week visit to Somalia aimed at assessing the situation and looking at who will fill the position of the force. of ATMIS peacekeeping in the country.

The purpose of the consultation visit, which began on September 24 with the arrival of the AU-UN joint mission in Somalia, was to prepare a detailed report on the structure of peacekeeping as well as financing and managing elections in the country. The statement of ATMIS has said that the next AU mission which will be for Aid and Stability in Somalia will be known in short as AUSSOM.

Cheick Dembele, the head of the AU's Peacekeeping Operations and Conflict Management Directorate, has said that the visit has had good results and has been able to bring clarity and encourage operational efficiency in the teams sent to Somalia.

Dembele also said that, AUSSOM is expected to be launched in January 2025, immediately after the expiry of ATMIS's work on December 31, 2024.  

For his part, Graham Maitland, the Director of the East Africa Unit at the United Nations Department of Political Affairs and Peacekeeping has said that the discussions held during the one-week visit of the delegation to Somalia were about the structure of the work of the new team. transitional arrangements and key funding issues.
