The Azerbaijani side appealed to the co-chairs of the Nuclear Energy Summit regarding the Metsamor NPP
Azerbaijan's civil society representatives addressed the co-chairs of the inaugural Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels yesterday with an open letter to the Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croix and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Raphael Grossi, on the issue of the Metsamor nuclear power plant in Armenia, "Azatutyun" writes.
According to the Azerbaijani side, they called on the leadership of the summit to pay attention to, as they defined, the "global danger posed by the nuclear power plant in an emergency state" and to raise the issue of immediately stopping the operation of the nuclear power plant before the Armenian government.
" The Metsamor nuclear power plant, which was built in 1976 in a seismic zone of 9.5 points, works with old technologies and is designed for 8 points. It poses a great nuclear threat to Azerbaijan, Turkey, Armenia and the entire region," the statement said.
Armenia has repeatedly stated that it actively cooperates with the International Atomic Energy Agency in ensuring nuclear safety, fulfilling all its obligations. Yesterday, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reaffirmed this during the inaugural Nuclear Energy Summit, also informing that Armenia is extending the operation period of the nuclear power plant from 2026 to 2036.
Grossi was also in Yerevan at the end of 2022. In the meeting with Prime Minister Pashinyan, the director general of the agency discussed the work aimed at increasing the safety level of the NPP and spoke with satisfaction about the reforms in the nuclear power plant.
