The Gabonese army takes power; nullify the election results
A state of panic has spread in Gabon after senior officers of the country's army announced that they have taken over the country's power, a few days after the presidential election. Through their televised statement, the commanders of the Gabonese army have said that they have taken power because the election held at the weekend is invalid. They have announced to cancel the results of the election, apart from dissolving all government institutions as well as closing the borders of the country. They have said that they have given their information on behalf of all the security and defense forces of the country. Earlier today, the Electoral Committee of Gabon announced that President Ali Bongo Ondimba has won the third term of seven years, by winning 64 percent of the votes cast.
A few minutes after the announcement, gunshots began to fill the sky of the capital of the central African country, Libreville. About 847,000 eligible voters participated in last Saturday's general election in Gabon. President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon 19 candidates competed in the presidential race this year including President Ali Bongo Ondimba (64) of the ruling Gabon Democratic Party (PDG). He has run for the presidency for the third consecutive term fighting against 18 other candidates, and his victory was expected to prolong the reign of the Bongo family which has ruled the country for 55 years. It will be remembered that, President Ali Bongo of Gabon suffered a stroke in 2018, while opponents pressed that he should have resigned because he cannot rule after suffering from the illness.
