The Indian Navy rescues a ship that was captured by Somali pirates
Indian navy soldiers, including special commandos, have rescued a cargo ship that was hijacked by Somali pirates and rescued 17 crew members.
In a post on the X social network, the Indian navy said that all 35 pirates aboard the Maltese-flagged cargo ship MV Ruen had surrendered.
The ship MV Ruen was hijacked at the end of last year and the navy has said that it succeeded in freeing the ship on Friday .
The EU navy has claimed that the ship may have been used to seize a Bangladeshi-flagged cargo ship off the coast of Somalia earlier this week .
The hijacking of the Ruen ship in December was the first time Somali pirates have been successful since 2017 when an international naval operation halted hijackings in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean .
Somali pirates have been hijacking ships in the world's most important waterways for a decade, but were forced to halt piracy due to international submarine operations before resurging last year .
