 The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ireland stated that the veto right of 5 members of the UN Security Council has no place in the 21st century. In a speech at the Munich conference, Michael Martin noted that the United States has repeatedly used its veto power to prevent a cease-fire in Gaza, adding: "The era of the veto is over, and it must be abolished, because it causes a step back in history." Noting that the right of veto is being abused, Martin added: "The existence of the right of veto in the Security Council has made the work of this structure ineffective." The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ireland emphasized that the Security Council resolutions on Gaza were useless, adding: "The Security Council has not issued any statement on Ukraine, which is a failure for this body."
