The Palestinians condemn the action of the Western countries to stop financial aid to UNRWA
Senior officials of the Government of the Palestinian Authority and of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement HAMAS have criticized the decision of about ten Western countries to stop financial aid to the United Nations aid organization for the Palestinians UNRWA and called on those countries to change it quickly their decision which they have said will cause "great" danger.
Before that, UNRWA itself announced that it is launching an investigation after the Zionist regime of Israel claimed that some of the organization's employees were involved in the October 7 operation of Al-Aqsa Storm against the hostile regime. The accusations made by the Zionist regime have caused no less than 10 Western countries to withdraw or temporarily suspend their financial aid to the UN organization, a move that the head of UNRWA has said is "shocking". UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini has stated in a statement that he issued yesterday that the suspension of financial aid threatens humanitarian activities in the region, especially in the Gaza Strip, and he called on the countries that stopped their aid to reconsider their decision because the Gaza region is facing the risk of suffering from an epidemic of mass starvation. Philippe Lazzarini Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Hussein al-Sheikh said the decision of those countries "includes great political and humanitarian risks". In a message he wrote on the X network, Al-Sheikh said: "at this special time and considering the continuation of the invasion and aggression against the Palestinian people, we need the highest level of support for this international organization and not to stop the support and assistance to him," and asked those Western countries to "change their decision immediately". Hamas, for its part, has criticized what it called the illegal Israeli regime's "threats" against the organization, after Tel Aviv claimed that several UNRWA workers were allegedly involved in Hamas' operation on October 7 in Al-Aqsa. "We ask the United Nations and international organizations not to accept the threats and tyrannical manipulations by Israel," stated the statement of the Hamas information office through the Telegram social network. UNRWA has about 30,000 staff, most of whom are Palestinians, excluding a very small number of international staff. Only 12 of those workers are accused by the Zionist administration of Israel of being involved in the October 7 attack against the administration. The United States, Australia, Canada, Italy, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, England and Scotland have announced the suspension of their financial aid to the United Nations aid organization for Palestinian refugees. However, Ireland and Norway have said they will continue their aid, stressing that UNRWA is doing a great and very important job to help the Palestinians in Gaza who have lost their homes and who are in great need of aid right now.
