The story of al-Quds Day
The history of World Quds (Jerusalem) Day dates back to the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran nearly forty years ago. One of the first actions taken by Imam Khomeini as leader of the newly formed Islamic Republic was the interruption of the supply of oil to the two regimes in which apartheid was in force, Israel and South Africa.
He inaugurated Al-Quds Day as an integral part of the month of Ramadan so that Muslims will never forget their responsibility and duty towards Palestine and oppressed peoples around the world.
On August 16, 1979 (Ramadan 1399 of the Hegira) he inaugurated "The Day for the Oppressed" with the following words: "Jerusalem (al-Quds) day is a world day, it is not a day dedicated exclusively to this city, it is the day of the struggle of the underprivileged against the arrogant, it is the day of the struggle of the oppressed people against the USA and against the superpowers, the day when the underprivileged must prepare against the arrogant and crush them, the day when the believers will distinguish themselves from the hypocrites (…) Jerusalem Day is the day when we can recognize which people and which regimes are on the side of international plotters and enemies of Islam.
Those who do not participate are against Islam and pro-Israel, and those who participate are pro-Islam and against its enemies – the United States and Israel. Jerusalem Day is the day of separation of Truth from Falsehood.” Since that day, every year, on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims and noble and free people all over the world participate in Jerusalem Day, demonstrating their closeness and solidarity with the the oppressed Palestinian people and its own condemnation of Israel's injustices and crimes.
