Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has said that the violent suppression of pro-Palestinian student demonstrations at Western universities, especially in the United States, exposes the state of panic of the Western system.

Speaking in Damascus on Sunday, Assad stressed that "the image of a wonderful and stunning West is now beginning to deteriorate among Western citizens."

"Today, Western citizens have discovered that the principles on which this system was based are lies, hypocrisy and fraud," he added.

"Therefore, we see a brutal repression that we have not seen before in universities. The truth is that this unprecedented brutal repression that we are seeing expresses a state of panic for the Western system in general," said the Syrian president.

In recent weeks, American university campuses have become battlegrounds for demonstrations against Israel's war on Gaza, resulting in a series of tensions and violent clashes.

Students are calling for an end to Israel's genocidal war on Gaza and demanding that universities distance themselves from companies that support the Israeli regime.

US police have arrested about 2,400 people during pro-Palestinian protests on 47 college campuses across the country since April 18, according to the Associated Press.
