The UN General Assembly will discuss the Sudan crisis tomorrow, Wednesday
On Wednesday this week, September 20, there will be a special meeting outside the General Assembly of the United Nations to collect aid and show support for the people of Sudan. The incident comes at a time when the fierce fighting that continues in the capital of Sudan, Khartoum, over the weekend has resulted in civilian deaths. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs of the UN, OCHA has said, "Our humanitarian stakeholders also tell us that the new fighting in South Darfur has displaced many people in the city of Nyala." People continue to be displaced, with more than 5.1 million already displaced since mid-April.
4.1 million people have become refugees within Sudan and more than 1 million have had to seek asylum abroad. Journalists have been told, "newly displaced families are arriving in areas that were already challenged by violence." OCHA says that since the start of the current conflict, at least 435 children have been reported killed and another 500 have died of starvation - although the true number may be much higher. The $2.6 billion humanitarian aid program for Sudan, which aims to help 18 million people, has so far only been 25 percent funded.
