The United Nations extends sanctions against Sudan for one more year

The United Nations Security Council has extended the arms embargo against Sudan for one more year until September 12, 2025. Those sanctions include those targeting specific individuals as well as arms embargoes. The draft of the resolution presented by the United States, was unanimously adopted by the 15-member Council.

United Nations Resolution 1591 was originally adopted by the United Nations Security Council on March 29, 2005, to impose sanctions on Sudan for targeting individuals and entities involved in the Darfur conflict.

It includes travel bans, asset freezes and arms embargoes. The sanctions committee that oversees the implementation is also part of the resolution along with a panel of experts who gather information on its implementation and provide information to the Council.

The US deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Robert Wood, has thanked the members of the Council for their cooperation in rebuilding the sanctions against Sudan for 12 more months.
