Tunisia's maritime security has announced that the country has rescued 50 undocumented migrants who had piled into sinking boats as it has also stopped three illegal immigration attempts in the southeast coast of the country in northern Africa.

The national defense officials have said in their statement through Facebook that most of the migrants come from African countries south of the Sahara Desert and have been rescued off the coast of the province of Sfax in Tunisia.

The statement did not give the number of people who tried to cross the Mediterranean Sea to the Italian island of Lampedusa, which is often chosen as the first stop for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa who risk their lives in the hope and dreams of a better life. in Europe.

In 2023, Tunisia arrested more than 75,000 illegal immigrants when they were trying to enter Europe through the Mediterranean Sea and most of them were those who were heading for Italy.

This was reported by the Mosaique FM private radio station which added that, in 2022, Tunisia twice arrested more than 35,000 illegal immigrants outside the shores of the country when they were traveling to Italy.

The radio station quoted the report of the spokesman of the Tunisian National Guard, Houcemeddine Jbabli, who said that, in the past several months, Tunisian security officials have intensified operations to deal with waves of illegal immigrants sent to the island of Lampedusa in Italy, especially from the region of southeast of Sfax to other regions of Tunisia.
