Turkish Military Attacks Important Facilities in Syria
The Tel Tamer power and transmission plant in Al-Hasakah, Syria is not operational due to the latest attacks by Turkish troops. The official Syrian news agency, SANA, reported that Saleh Idris, Director General of al-Hasakah Electricity Company, said Tuesday (26/9/2023) that the Turkish occupation forces targeted the Tel Tamer power plant with several mortars, which caused the power plant to become inoperable. Idris added that due to the shutdown of the power plant in the Tel Tamer area, electricity supply to the residential center and surrounding villages was cut off. The Director General of the Al-Hasakah Electric Company emphasized that currently efforts are being made to reconnect electricity in the area and the Al-Hasaka Electric Company is working to repair the damage as soon as possible. Since the start of this week, villages on the outskirts of Tel Tamer have been repeatedly attacked by Turkish forces resulting in material damage to houses and infrastructure in the area.
Under the 2017 agreement between Iran, Russia and Turkey as guarantors of the Astana peace, four safe zones were established in Syria. Three regions were under the control of the Syrian army in 2018, but the fourth region, which includes Idlib province in northwestern Syria and parts of Latakia, Hama and Aleppo provinces, is still in the hands of terrorist groups primarily Tahrir al-Sham. In late summer 2018, Russian and Turkish leaders reached an agreement in Sochi, Russia, in which Turkey pledged to eliminate or disarm terrorists based in the region without bloodshed. But in fact, this promise has not been fulfilled to date, and terrorists have repeatedly attacked Syrian military forces or Russian bases around this region.
