UN expert on human rights and terrorism: inhumane treatment in Guantanamo

A "cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment" with almost constant surveillance, limited access to families and isolation. This is how a UN expert described the treatment to which the Guantanamo detainees are subjected at the end of their first visit to the American super prison. After decades of deafening requests by independent UN human rights experts, the UN Special Commissioner for Human Rights and Counter-Terrorism, Fionnuala Ni Aolain, was allowed to visit the facility on the island of Cuba in February. "The closure" of Guantanamo "remains a priority", she states in her report.
