UN: UNRWA has no alternative in Gaza

A UN spokesman has announced that the UN Secretary-General has stated in his letter to Israel that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) cannot be replaced and that it will continue to carry out its work in Palestine.

Stephen Dujarric has stated that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has sent a letter to Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Denon, in which he has clarified our position that, in accordance with international law, UNRWA's essential work cannot be replaced in many areas.

Dujarric added: UNRWA's activities will increase even after the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, and we do not want to jeopardize our humanitarian activities there. UNRWA has a mission and a mandate from the United Nations and it must fulfill this mandate.

This comes amid a situation in which the Israeli Zionist regime has said that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has until the end of January to withdraw from the occupied holy city of Quds (Jerusalem).

The illegal Israeli regime has justified its action by raising baseless allegations that UNRWA, which has been supporting the Palestinians since 1949, allegedly employs personnel who participate in terrorist activities.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Palestine Refugees (UNHCR) has been emphasizing that no other institution can fill the role of the organization in serving and delivering aid to Palestinian refugees.
