UN warns of crisis in Gaza Strip
The deputy executive director of the UN World Food Program said: "The situation in the Gaza Strip is becoming increasingly desperate."
Karl Skau said in an interview with journalists in New York:" Half the population of the Gaza Strip is starving. In other words, 9 out of 10 people are malnourished and don’t know when they will be able to eat their next meal.” "Humanitarian operations in the Gaza Strip are 'on the verge of collapse' and in this situation it is impossible to provide assistance on a regular basis,” he added. In this regard, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philip Lazzarini, said that the crowding of people near UNRWA shelters has made it more difficult to provide assistance to people. He told reporters on Thursday: “Hunger in Gaza has worsened over the past few weeks. The number of people who have not eaten for two or three days has increased." Lazzarini explained: “Today Gaza is no longer a suitable place to live. The infrastructure in the southern Gaza Strip has been destroyed." “The UN has lost access to the northern part of the Gaza Strip since December 1,” a senior UN official emphasized. Almost 90% of Gaza's population has been forced to flee their homes, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The Palestinian Health Ministry spokesman in Gaza announced: "Since October 7, the Israeli regime's attacks on Gaza have martyred 18,787 Palestinians and injured another 50,897."
