Unprecedented Brutality in Gaza: 301 Days of Conflict Result in Tens of Thousands of Palestinian Casualties
According to the World Food Programme, 90% of Palestinians in the area have not had food for 24 hours or more.
In the 301 days since the onset of relentless Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, the humanitarian crisis has reached alarming proportions. Data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health reveals that approximately 40,000 Palestinians, including 16,000 children, have lost their lives due to the continuous bombardment. The conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, has also resulted in over 91,000 injuries, affecting nearly 4% of Gaza's total population.
Despite two UN Security Council resolutions calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and directives from the International Court of Justice to prevent genocide and improve humanitarian conditions, the attacks have persisted unabated. The latest figures indicate that more than 10,000 Palestinians remain trapped under rubble, their deaths likely to be confirmed only after the conflict ends.
The southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis and the central region of Deir al-Balah have recently witnessed a significant increase in fatalities, further exacerbating the dire situation. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that over 180,000 Palestinians have been displaced from Khan Yunis due to intense bombardment, marking a new wave of internal displacement amid the ongoing conflict.
The humanitarian crisis extends beyond the immediate violence. Nearly the entire population of Gaza, approximately 2.2 million people, is grappling with severe food insecurity. The World Food Programme reports that 90% of Palestinians in Gaza have gone without food for more than 24 hours, highlighting the desperate need for international intervention.
The persistent conflict has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and international bodies, who call for an immediate end to the violence and greater efforts to address the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people. The silence and inaction of the international community have been criticized for allowing the situation to deteriorate to such an extent.
UNRWA and other humanitarian agencies are urgently appealing for global efforts to alleviate the suffering in Gaza and to work towards a peaceful resolution that upholds the rights and dignity of all individuals affected by the conflict. The staggering human toll and the widespread destruction underscore the critical need for sustained international engagement to bring an end to this prolonged crisis.
