On 3 June, i.e. the day before the start of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, General David Petraeus announced its "impressive" success from the very first days. Interviewed by the BBC, he prophesied: “I think this counteroffensive will be very impressive. My feeling is that they will achieve combined arms effects, in other words they will successfully execute combined arms operations, with engineers overcoming defensive posts, clearing minefields and so on; behind these will follow armored vehicles protected by infantry which will eliminate the threat of anti-tank missiles; then air defense, which will keep Russian planes away; electronic warfare jamming their communications; the logistics in support and artillery and mortars [hammering] ahead.”

“And the most important thing of all… is that when the lead elements inevitably reach the peak of their employment, after 72-96 hours, which is the maximum you can get, and they [the enemies ed] will have suffered losses… they will move the other units, which will push forward, all the way, to capitalize on progress and maintain momentum; I think all of this can remove the entire Russian defense in that area and that it will open up other opportunities along the flanks.”

Petraeus is not just any quisling. He was commander-in-chief of US forces for the Middle East, a position that led him to direct the US invasion forces in Afghanistan for years; then, having resigned these roles, he became head of the CIA, a position he had to abandon following a scandal.

Not only that, he is one of the most authoritative spokesmen of the neocons, enjoying an intimacy with the Kagan family denied to others (this family controls the Institute of Study of War, which has strong ties with the US military-industrial apparatus and manages the flow of mainstream information on the Ukrainian war and much more).

Petraeus had foreseen everything… but it didn't quite go like this, on the contrary. This interview should be compared with what his colleagues are saying now, i.e. that the first attacks, disastrous results for Ukraine, are something secondary, not very significant, etc. It is clear that, after having made all the calculations wrong, they have to reduce what happened.

His prophecy reveals how detached the prophets of war and doom are from reality. On the other hand, Petraeus had been the protagonist of the surge in Afghanistan, having convinced America that by sending more troops the United States would have achieved a certain victory (then they had to withdraw in shame).

And it is a bit like what is happening in Ukraine, in which we have witnessed a surge of another type, i.e. the increasingly massive shipment of weapons, and increasingly sophisticated weapons, also in this case heralded as a harbinger of brilliant victories , those described by the words of Petraeus.

The general himself, in an evident state of inspiration, had predicted the formation of a coalition of willing countries which, outside NATO, would send military contingents to support the forces in Kiev as necessary. That is the third world war.

Such is the madness gripping NATO leaders. Such is the setback inflicted on them by reality. And it is tragic that, despite the evident detachment from reality, these characters continue to lay down the law, as demonstrated by the BBC interview with Petraeus - one of many - who is consulted as a sort of oracle despite the obvious, tragic, mistakes of the past.
