What will lead to the American effort to change the name of the West Bank to Judea and Samaria?
Ahead of the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, that country's expansionist plans and conspiracies have increased.
Trump's advisers and close associates are talking in particular about officially annexing the West Bank to the territories occupied by Israel. And Republican Senator Tom Cotton has proposed changing the name of the West Bank. He proposed using the Jewish name Judah and Samarra for the West Bank in all American documents.
The new US ambassador to occupied Palestine, Mike Huckabee, also earlier stated that the Donald Trump administration is ready to support any plan by the Netanyahu government to annex the West Bank and establish Israeli sovereignty in the region. The plan to annex 30 percent of the West Bank to the 1948 occupied territories is one of the axes of the racist "Deal of the Century" plan that the US wanted to implement during the previous period of Trump's presidency.
And today, some of Trump’s advisers have started talking about its implementation again. The US Israel lobby is trying in every way to get Trump’s support and change the situation in favor of the regime. The seizure of more territories in the West Bank is one of the most important demands of this lobby. However, this demand is unacceptable not only from the point of view of the Palestinians and their supporters, but also from the point of view of international law.
In recent years, with the support of the US, Israel has given greater momentum to the settlement building process in the West Bank and Jerusalem. And the far-right faction of Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet has been seriously and publicly announcing a policy of official annexation of the West Bank since 2023. And the war in Gaza and the situation of the Palestinians on the one hand, and the US political situation and Trump’s election on the other, have now provided more opportunities for the invaders to occupy this land.
The Minister of Finance of the Zionist regime, Betsleil Smotrich, expressed hope that with the support of the new US government, it will be possible to abolish the civil administration of the West Bank, which includes the Gaza Strip. Referring to the consultation with the Israeli ambassador in Washington, he noted that efforts are being made to start this process. Smotrich announced the confiscation of 27 thousand donums (ancient territorial units) of land in the West Bank, which is the largest operation in this regard since the 1993 Oslo Accords.
The Israeli authorities are now trying to implement their occupation and expansionist programs in the West Bank. Hamas stated in this regard: “The settlement policy and the aggression of the settlers in the cities and villages of the West Bank are very dangerous for the Zionists, as the Palestinian people will defeat their occupation plans with their resistance and perseverance.”
Therefore, although Israel has high hopes for Trump to advance its aggressive policy, history shows that the Palestinian people, as the main owners of this land, will never surrender to such plots, and as Hamas has stated, the West Bank will continue to remain a volcano of revolution and anger until the occupiers are destroyed.
