Yemen, Swedish flag on fire after desecration of the Quran
Yemeni protesters burned the Swedish flag to condemn acts of desecration of the Holy Quran in the Nordic country. The protest was organized Thursday by the Yemen Youth and Sports Office in the capital Sana'a under the slogan: "The Holy Quranis the crown above our heads and the light of our hearts."
The participants condemned the Swedish authorities for authorizing the burning of a copy of the Koran outside the Stockholm mosque, demanding the punishment of the perpetrators of the crime. The green light came after a ruling by the Swedish Court of Appeal according to which it was wrong for the public security authorities to deny the demonstrations on the pretext of the risk of an attack. It was a man of Iraqi origin, Salwan Momika, who desecrated the sacred text of Islam, first crushing it and then burning it in front of the Stockholm Mosque.
He was able to carry out his demonstration benefiting from police protection. The provocation coincided with an occasion: the beginning of the three-day Muslim feast Eid al-Adha, a feast of sacrifice celebrated by Muslims all over the world. Yemeni protesters have also called on the international community to take a firm stand against countries that allow insults to Islam and religious sanctities. Abdullah Obeid, director of the Youth and Sports Office, attended the rally and condemned the sacrilegious act, inviting Muslim countries to cut ties with Sweden and Denmark. "We are people of faith and wisdom, and it is our religious duty to resist this heinous crime," Obeid said.
