Zakharova: The West wants to repeat the scenario of Ukraine in Serbia
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry accused the West of trying to drag Serbia down an illegal path.
Maria Zakharova said about the situation in Serbia that the West was trying to lead the Serbs into an unconstitutional field. “If a person is already outside the framework of the law, he is vulnerable,” Zakharova emphasized, noting that protests in Serbia have grown into pogroms and a real threat “not only to the authorities, but also to local residents.” Zakharova explained that the nature of what is happening in Serbia is similar to the events in Ukraine. The West, using the same mechanism, imposed conditions on Serbia that were incompatible with development methods based on the interests and wishes of its people. “The Serbian authorities did not allow the unrest in the country to lead to a repetition of the Ukrainian scenario. They declared national interests above all,” she said. Stressing that Russia supports Serbia, especially in the energy sector, Zakharova recalled how the West bombed Belgrade with depleted uranium ammunition, which led to an increase in the number of people suffering from cancerous tumors. Pro-Western groups opposed to the Serbian government and the results of the recent elections attacked the Serbian National Assembly at midnight Sunday and tried to break into the building by breaking down the doors. Pro-Western groups claim there was fraud in Belgrade's parliamentary and city assembly elections. During Sunday night's protest, protesters carried signs with the slogan "thief, thief." In addition, thousands of Serbian protesters took to the streets of Belgrade on Monday evening for the eighth day in a row against what they call "fraud in the recent parliamentary and local elections" in Serbia. The West has long wanted to change Serbia’s position in front of Russia and has put forward an important condition for Serbia’s accession to the EU, i.e. Belgrade's renunciation of Kosovo and recognition of its independence.
