Arab League delegation in Damascus to discuss reopening
The recent visit of a group of Arab lawmakers and lawmakers to Damascus frames the various attempts by some countries, especially Iraq, to restore relations between Syria and the Arab League, more than a decade after Syria's suspension from the 22-member Arab bloc. The high-profile lawmakers landed at Damascus International Airport on Sunday and were officially received by Syrian People's Assembly President Hammouda Sabbagh. “The atmosphere at the 34th Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union conference in the Iraqi capital Baghdad was very positive. He focused on unity among all Arab countries and stressed the need for Syria's return to the Arab diplomatic fold," Sabbagh told reporters. He added that the visit also underlines the fact that Syria is at the heart of any joint Arab action to address current challenges and crises.
