Biden Signs Order Sanctions Against Jewish Settlers Attacking Palestinians
US President Joe Biden issued an executive order on Thursday allowing the US administration to impose sanctions against Jewish settlers involved in attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
Two senior Biden administration officials said Thursday that Biden's order establishes a system of imposing financial sanctions and visa restrictions on those who attack, intimidate Palestinians or seize their property, CNN reported. U.N. data shows that since the start of Israel's war in Gaza, the number of daily settler attacks has more than doubled compared with the previous four months. The order freezes the individuals' assets in the United States and generally prohibits Americans from doing business with them. The sanctions come as public pressure on Biden to establish a ceasefire in Gaza has increased and he is aware of the consequences of that pressure, especially for the election among Democratic supporters. Analysts interpret the move as part of the White House's effort to ease the pressure of public opinion in the United States and the world amid growing criticism of the Biden administration for its full support of Israel in the Gaza war, which has killed more than 26,000 people and injured tens of thousands. This is at a time when, over the past four months, the authorities in Washington have not only supplied Israel with weapons and insisted on continuing the war in Gaza, but have also prevented the implementation of decisions that could stop the war in Gaza.
