Britain admits its advanced tank was destroyed in Ukraine
The British Defense Minister acknowledged the destruction of the advanced Challenger 2 tank for the first time on the battlefield in Ukraine. According to him, London did not intend to send new tanks to replace the destroyed tanks. Grant Shapps, Wednesday (6/9/2023) in an interview with Sky News television station confirmed the destruction of the Challenger 2 tank for the first time on the Ukrainian battlefield. "I can confirm that this news is true. As far as we know, this is probably the first case of a Challenger tank being destroyed. We awarded 14 Challenger tanks to Ukraine.
We had expected that on the battlefield there would be material losses of this kind," he said. The British Defense Secretary added, "I can also confirm that there were six Ukrainian military personnel, inside the destroyed tank, and all of them survived." Regarding the details of the destruction of the Challenger 2 tank, Shapps said, "This tank was hit by Russian artillery. But as I said, all the military personnel on board survived." Asked whether the British would send replacements for the destroyed tanks, Shapps explained, "No, they already have 14 tanks, and one of them was destroyed. We accept that on the battlefield something like this will happen." (HS)
