Declaration of the Nigerian people against the war in Niger
The population of Kano state, Nigeria, opposed a possible proxy war of member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Niger. According to an Iran-press correspondent in Kano, hundreds of Nigerians took to the main streets of the city of Kano yesterday and stressed that any outbreak of war in Niger is condemned. Shouting anti-French and American slogans, at the end of the demonstration they burned the French flag as a sign of disagreement with that country's policy towards Niger.
The ECOWAS bloc imposed sanctions on Niger following a July coup by Niger's Presidential Guard forces against the government of ousted President Mohamed Bazum. Disagreements among ECOWAS member countries and daily demonstrations by the people of Niger in support of new political developments in the country have upset the political equations of France, America and ECOWAS regarding possible military action in Niger.
