DRC rebels attack a UN helicopter and injure two South African security guards
Rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, have attacked one of the helicopters of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in that country, MONUSCO.
The spokesperson of the Secretary General of the United Nations Stéphane Dujarric has said that the attack on the helicopter of the United Nations took place in the area of Karuba in the province of North Kivu, in the area of Masisi, in the east of the country. The incident has caused injuries to two South African peacekeepers, including one seriously injured. The helicopter was able to land safely in Goma, and the peacekeepers are currently receiving treatment. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo DRC who is also the Head of MONUSCO, Bintou Keita, has strongly condemned the attack on a plane bearing the United Nations logo, which comes almost a year after a similar attack that resulted in death of South African peacekeepers. Mrs. Keita has reminded that attacks against peacekeepers can be war crimes. The UN mission will spare no effort, in cooperation with the DRC authorities, to bring the perpetrators to justice. Also on Friday, an explosion in Goma injured two people, while government officials blamed M23 rebels.
