Ethiopia: More than 400 people have died due to famine in Tigray
More than 400 people have died in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia due to famine caused by the drought that has continued to be witnessed in some areas of the country in the Horn of Africa.
This is contained in the report of the Human Rights Commission which has also warned about the dire humanitarian situation in some areas of the country. The report is issued while the authorities of those areas maintain the position that no one has died from hunger in the area. The institute has said that the evaluation of its experts has identified that millions of citizens from the two states have been affected, while thousands of people have been evicted from their homes. The head of the institution, Endale Haile, has said that such deaths have occurred in the last six months and there are thousands of children from those areas who have failed to go to school. The institute has called on government agencies not to waste more time on the situation and instead start providing aid. Last December, it was reported that at least 176 people, including 75 women, have died in Tigray due to starvation. In addition, one month before that, namely November 2023, more than 50 people were reported to have died in the northern areas of Tigray and Amhara in Ethiopia due to hunger. In addition, recently, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said more than 30 refugees have lost their lives due to hunger and malnutrition in Gambella province located in the west of the Horn of Africa country.
