Europe is trying to reduce Russian influence in the Caucasus
Noting that Europe is pursuing a policy of reducing Russia's influence in the Caucasus, Igory, an expert on Caucasus issues, said: "The Russians do not want the West and especially NATO to appear in their traditional sphere of influence."
In an interview with Igori said: "Taking advantage of the situation in Ukraine, the Europeans are trying first to get involved in the Zangezur corridor, and then to destroy the Russian influence in the Caucasus. Armenia recently became a member of the International Criminal Court. And that means that if the president of the Russian Federation visits that country, Yerevan must arrest him and hand him over to the International Criminal Court."
He noted: "This process should be considered as a leverage of the West's pressure on Russia, to which the Russians have expressed their opposition. And the RA Prime Minister, putting pressure on the West and leaving Russia, is trying to get more support from Europe and the USA. He succeeded in that to some extent. However, it should be taken into account that the military infrastructures of Armenia, as well as the training programs of the army, meet the Russian standards. And changing this course in favor of the West will be costly for Yerevan. I think the Munich conference was an opportunity to further distance Armenia from Russia and bring it closer to Azerbaijan in order to sign a peace treaty. However, there are many disagreements between the two countries, one of which concerns the Zangezur Corridor.
According to the expert: "Despite all this, the Russians pursue their own interests in the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process. It should be noted that about 4 million Armenians live in Russia, and there is a Russian military base in Armenia. Therefore, if Moscow feels threatened by Armenia, it will mix the equations. Considering the current global situation, the Russians do not want the West and especially NATO to appear in their traditional sphere of influence.
