German Court Finds Christian Brueckner Not Guilty of Unrelated Sexual Offences During Continual McCann Research
The Braunschweig state court in Germany cleared Christian Brueckner, the key suspect in the 2007 disappearance of British infant Madeleine McCann, of several sexual offences in an unexpected ruling on October 8, 2024. Charges pertaining to two counts of rape and two counts of sexual abuse emanating from events claimed to have happened in Portugal between 2000 and 2017 fell upon Brueckner.
The court's ruling is set against a background of convoluted legal procedures involving Brueckner, who has attracted a lot of media coverage because of his ties to the well-publicized McCann case. After finishing his term, prosecutors had sought a 15-year prison sentence and advised Brueckner be put under preventative detention. One can appeal the court's decision; so, both the prosecution and the defence would probably consider their alternatives in view of the outcome.
