Fighters of the M23 rebel group have captured the important town of Kalembe in the Masisi district and advanced to the neighboring district of Walikale in the northern Kivu region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The action of the rebels to control the town gives them a great opportunity to capture villages rich in minerals in the Walikale district.

The town of Kalembe, which is considered an important route to the mineral-rich district of Walikale, has been hit by violence since 2021 when the M23 rebels resumed attacks in the North Kivu region.

The wave of new attacks by the M23 and ADF rebels continues to torture the people of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) while the fighting between the government troops and the rebels of the two groups continues.

ADF militia

The ADF rebel group was founded in the 1990s by several Ugandan dissident groups. It was defeated by the Ugandan army, but its remaining members fled to the eastern areas of the DRC and are carrying out insurgency attacks until now.

Since the end of 2021, Ugandan and Congolese soldiers have launched a joint operation to fight the ADF rebels in eastern DRC.

Another rebel group in eastern DRC is the M23 rebels, which the DRC leaders accuse Rwanda of supporting. The rebels, like the ADF, have now intensified their attacks in eastern DRC and have captured several towns since June. The biggest victims of such acts of rebellion are ordinary citizens, especially women and small children.
