Mass protests again against Israel's cabinet

Around a quarter of a million people protested in the occupied territories on Saturday evening against the Israeli cabinet's controversial judicial restructuring.

In central Tel Aviv and dozens of other occupied locations, protesters gathered for the 11th consecutive Saturday. There were also protests in cities like al-Quds (Jerusalem) and Beersheba. Speaking to protesters in Ashdod, opposition politician Yair Lapid condemned the cabinet for rejecting a compromise proposed by regime President Isaac Herzog on Wednesday.

Lapid told protesters that members of the right-wing religious cabinet "don't want negotiations... They want to push legislation...". Herzog has called for the reform to be postponed and recently presented his own plan. However, this was rejected by the Prime Minister of the regime, Benjamin Netanyahu.

In view of Netanyahu's resistance, Herzog warned of a civil war. "Anyone who thinks that a real civil war with human lives is a limit that we could never reach has no idea what he is talking about," the regime's president said earlier this week. The reforms proposed by the Israeli Prime Minister aim to enable Parliament to overrule Supreme Court decisions by a simple majority. In addition, politicians should be given more influence in the appointment of judges.
