Rifles, submachine guns, 52 handguns and about 4,000 bullets were found during a search of the cells of a maximum security prison in Honduras that houses gang members.
The Military Police of Public Order (PMOP) explained, through its spokesman, José Coello, that in the Támara penitentiary alone, four AR-15 rifles, an Uzi submachine gun, 38 9mm pistols and 14 of other calibers were seized. with magazines and 4,000 rounds, four frag grenades and two smoke grenades, as well as 60 sidearms.
Tamara prison, considered the most important in the country, is located 25 kilometers from Tegucigalpa and houses about 6,000 inmates, but it is not known how many of them belong to gangs.
The search operation also seized broadcasting equipment, including cell phones, video game consoles, 556 plasma televisions and 320 audio equipment, along with drugs and cash, the officer showed at a press conference.
Honduran prisons are considered by the authorities "crime academies", where more than 1,000 deaths have been recorded in the last 20 years, according to the state commissioner for human rights.
