Palestine's UN membership file still awaits approval

The UN Security Council announced a final decision on Palestine's bid for permanent UN membership by the end of April.

The request for full Palestinian membership in the United Nations must be approved by the Security Council, but the US, as a supporter of the Zionist regime, could veto it.

Palestine's request for full membership of the United Nations, if approved by the Security Council, must also be approved by two-thirds of the 193 members of the United Nations General Assembly.

Earlier, Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian representative to the UN, said that the Palestinian Authority wants the UN Security Council to vote this month on full Palestinian membership in the international body, as the application is still pending since 2011 and the Security Council has not made a formal decision on this occasion.

According to the portal "Rai al-Yaum", on Monday evening the Security Council held a closed meeting on the issue of Palestine's application for permanent membership in the UN.

Negotiations on Palestinian membership of the UN will continue in April, according to Vanessa Fraser, Malta's ambassador to the UN, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council.

Riyad Mansour also called the Security Council meeting on Palestinian membership in the UN historic, although the success of this action is unlikely in the current situation.

Robert Wood, deputy US representative to the UN, also said that the independence of the state of Palestine should be recognized as part of an agreement with Israel.

Meanwhile, Gilad Ardan, the Israeli regime's UN representative, criticized the Security Council's efforts to recognize an independent Palestinian state while ignoring the regime's brutal crimes against Palestinians.
