Pneumonia in China, increase in respiratory diseases among children
Chinese media have reported a steady increase in infections with a pathogen called mycoplasma among kindergarten and primary school children.
The World Health Organization has made an official request to China for detailed information on the sharp increase in respiratory diseases and pneumonia outbreaks in children. It is unclear whether these are associated with the overall increase in respiratory infections previously reported by Chinese authorities or separate events. Therefore, WHO requested further epidemiological and clinical information, as well as laboratory results from these clusters reported among children, and recommended the use of all measures to reduce the risk of respiratory diseases.
