Protests against the results of the elections in Mozambique continue despite calls for dialogue
The opposition in Mozambique has continued to protest against the results of last month's elections.
The protests began on October 21 after Venancio Mondlane, a candidate supported by the opposition party Podemos, called a protest against the murder of his lawyer Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe, a Podemos official.
On October 24, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced Frelimo and its candidate Daniel Chapo as the winners of the vote by obtaining 71 percent of the vote.
Mondlane has rejected the results of the CNE which gave him 20% of the vote and called for nationwide protests against alleged election fraud. The protests have continued despite the call for negotiations to end the conflict.
The opposition Renamo party led by Ossufo Momade and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique led by Lutero Simango joined Mondlane's call for nationwide demonstrations to demand "the restoration of electoral truth".
At least 30 people are reported to have been killed in protests against the election results following the victory of the FRELIMO ruling party candidate Daniel Chapo.
