Saudi Arabia leads in food waste in the world
Saudi Arabia leads the way in wasting or throwing away food in the world while millions of people are facing severe food shortages including the Palestinians in Gaza who are facing Israeli aggression.
According to the Food Waste Report of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Saudi Arabia throws away 50 percent of all the food thrown away in the world.
The Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia, Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Mohsen Al Fadhli has confirmed the results of the United Nations while admitting that the country is suffering a great loss.
According to the report, food waste costs the Saudi kingdom $10.6 billion annually. During this holy month of Ramadan, the Saudi government has launched a campaign to encourage citizens to stop throwing away food and learn how to take care of leftover food.
The chairman of the board of directors of the Hefz Al-Nema organization in Makkah, Abdullah Osama Filali has said that the organization has taken measures to reduce waste, including making agreements with hotels, restaurants and wedding halls to take extra food and distribute it to the needy.
In Africa, the top three countries leading in food waste are Seychelles, Tunisia and Egypt. The countries with the lowest rate of food waste are South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
The United Nations has revealed that when a large amount of food is wasted every day, 783 million people in the world are facing severe hunger.
A new report by the United Nations Environment Organization (UNEP) has said that, while one-third of the world's people are facing severe food shortages, one billion meals, which is equal to one-fifth of all food, are thrown away every day and end up in landfills.
The UNEP report, which has been given the address "Food Waste Project 2024" highlights the latest statistics from 2022 which show that 1.05 billion tons of food was wasted.
