Somaliland parliamentarians cancel the agreement with Ethiopia to reach the Red Sea
Lawmakers in the breakaway region of Somaliland have scrapped an agreement they reached with Ethiopia to allow Addis Ababa to use the main port in Somaliland.
In their statement yesterday evening, all the parliamentarians of the two parliaments of Somaliland, especially from the states of Adwal and Salal on the coast of the region, have said that the Red Sea agreement reached between Somaliland and Ethiopia was illegal and aimed at disrupting the unity of the people of Somaliland. Somaliland parliamentarians have pointed out conflicting statements from Somaliland and Ethiopian leaders about the agreement that allows Ethiopia to have a permanent naval base and maritime and commercial services in the Gulf of Aden. Somalia, for its part, opposed the agreement reached in early January this year between Somaliland and Ethiopia regarding ports in the Red Sea and called it illegal, and that it violates its sovereignty. Relations between the two countries have been strained since Ethiopia reached an agreement with Somaliland on January 1 this year. The Ethiopian government has defended its decision to sign the agreement without the approval of the Mogadishu government saying that reaching an agreement with Somaliland will not affect any party or country.
