China has imposed sanctions on an American research firm over the provision of information related to forced labor in the country's western Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. Reuters reported on Wednesday, the 27th, that China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has hired Karon, a U.S. research and analysis firm that provides information to help companies comply with U.S. laws regarding allegations of forced labor in Xinjiang. It was announced that sanctions had been imposed on Kalon was founded by former U.S. Treasury Department officials and is based in Los Angeles. However, as Karon does not have a presence in China, the company commented that the move is "mostly symbolic" and will not affect its operations or ability to serve customers. The company also said it "continues to provide objective, independent and trusted source-based research and data analysis" to help businesses manage risk . According to Karon, clients are using the company's data to comply with the US Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. According to China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the sanctioned individuals will be barred from entering China, including Hong Kong and Macau, and Karon's assets in China will be frozen. Furthermore, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also designated the company's chief investigator and a former researcher at the U.S. Advanced Defense Research Center as targets for sanctions. China's latest measures are expected to have a further impact on U.S.-China relations, which have become tense over the past few years.
