The ICJ will hear the case regarding the Israeli invasion of Rafah
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will hold hearings to discuss new emergency measures regarding the Israeli occupation of the southern city of Rafah in the besieged Gaza Strip.
The court has said that the sessions on Thursday and Friday will deal with the request to the ICJ to order more urgent measures against Israel regarding its attack on Rafah.
The actions are part of an ongoing case that South Africa filed at the ICJ in December 2023 accusing Israel of violating the Genocide Convention during the brutal war in Gaza.
The ICJ earlier this year ordered the Israeli government to take all measures within its power to prevent genocide in Gaza. The ICJ order is part of its interim ruling on emergency measures in its genocide case against Israel.
Several countries including Egypt, Turkey and Colombia have now officially requested to join the case against Israel in the ICJ.
The President of Colombia has also asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for the Israeli prime minister due to the genocide in Gaza.
Gustavo Petro has said that Benjamin Netanyahu will not stop the genocide and this means that there is a need to issue a warrant for his arrest.
The President of Colombia has also asked the United Nations Security Council to establish a peacekeeping force in the Gaza Strip.
