The nations that make up the Sahel Union are meeting today in Niamey, Niger
Leaders of the Sahel Union are meeting today in the capital of Niger, Niamey to discuss various issues.
Niamey, the capital of Niger, today hosts the first meeting of the Heads of State of the United Sahel (AES), created in September 2023. Colonel Assimi Goïta of Mali and Captain Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso have been received by their Niger counterpart , General Abdouramane Tiani.
This meeting will be held before the summit meeting of the Economic Community of West African countries, ECOWAS, scheduled for tomorrow in Abuja, Nigeria. These countries that make up the Sahel Union withdrew from the ECOWAS community at the beginning of this year.
This will be the first meeting of its kind between the three heads of state, although several bilateral meetings have already taken place. All have since turned their backs on France, the former colonial power, and ECOWAS, which they accuse of being a puppet of Paris and not supporting them enough in their fight against terrorist groups.
Despite this separation, several heads of state in the Economic Community of West African countries, ECOWAS, continue to call for dialogue between the two groups. This is the main goal of Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the president of Senegal, who came to power recently, who saw that reconciliation is possible between ECOWAS and AES.
