Trump's team seeks US withdrawal from the World Health Organization

A group of experts from the World Health Organization has announced the intention of the newly elected US president's team to withdraw from the World Health Organization.

Trump's team is pushing for the US to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), which could be announced as early as the inauguration on January 20, the Financial Times reports, citing experts. They point to the "catastrophic" consequences of such a decision, as the US withdrawal would deprive the WHO of its largest source of funding.

"America will leave a huge vacuum in global health funding and governance. I don't see anyone who can fill that gap," Georgetown University Law School professor Lawrence Gostin told the newspaper.

This is not the first time that there have been rumors of America leaving the global institution. In 2020, at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Trump initiated the process of leaving the World Health Organization and accused the organization of being controlled by China.
