Ukraine angry over Russia's chairmanship of the UN Security Council
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine criticized Russia's chairmanship of the UN Security Council.According to the AAA news agency, Dmitry Kuleba said on Saturday in response to Russia's chairmanship of the UN Security Council: "Russia's chairmanship of the UN Security Council is a slap in the face of the international community."
Despite Ukraine's complaints and pleas, US officials have said that Washington cannot prevent Russia, as a permanent member of the Security Council and holder of veto power, from taking the presidency of the UN Security Council.
On Saturday, April 1, 2023, Russia assumed the chairmanship of the UN Security Council for a period of one month.Russia last chaired the Security Council in February 2022.The Presidency of the Security Council is rotating for one month and the head of each country's delegation will be considered the head of the UN Security Council.
The 5 permanent members of the Security Council include Russia, China, the United States, Britain and France, which have veto power in this council. The main task of this council is to maintain international peace and security, but due to the unilateralism of some of these members, the Security Council has deviated from its main mission and in many cases proved to be ineffective.
The 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council are elected by the UN General Assembly, taking into account the participation of the members of this organization in the maintenance of international peace and security and other goals of the organization, as well as on the basis of equitable geographical distribution.
In fact, the 10 elected members of the Security Council are elected by the General Assembly for a two-year term starting on 1 January. A member who withdraws from membership cannot be immediately re-elected.Each year, the UN General Assembly elects 5 new members to replace the old members.
