UN Secretary-General calls on Israel to stop attacks on Syria

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is concerned about Israel's airstrikes on Syria and calls for them to stop. This was announced at a briefing by UN Secretary-General Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

"The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the recent large-scale violations of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Secretary-General is particularly concerned about the hundreds of airstrikes carried out by Israel in several parts of Syria," Dujarric said.

According to the spokesperson, Guterres is emphasizing the urgent need to de-escalate violence "on all fronts, across the country." Referring to Israel's justifications that the strikes on Syria are being carried out to prevent the former regime's weapons from falling into the wrong hands, Dujarric said that many countries make excuses for violating the sovereignty of others.

"It is clear that we are concerned about the ongoing violations of Syria's sovereignty, of Syria's territorial integrity. At this time, Syria needs the support of its neighbors to move towards a form of governance that is inclusive, democratic and protects the rights of minorities. In addition, it is imperative that those who have established control in Syria ensure that all weapons and everything are controlled and not subject to looting or disappearance," the UN Secretary-General's spokesperson said.

He also noted that the UN Secretary-General's message is to Israel and other countries that can take advantage of the opportunity to immediately stop the attacks on Syria.
