UN Secretary-General visits Iraq for first time in 6 years
After arriving in Baghdad, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said during a joint press conference with Fuad Hussein, the country's foreign minister, "I am very pleased to visit Iraq."
Guterres said: "This is a journey of solidarity; solidarity with the people and democratic institutions of Iraq and solidarity means that the United Nations is fully committed to supporting the institutions of this country." The Secretary-General of the United Nations added: "We are confident that through an open and inclusive dialogue, Iraqis can overcome the problems and challenges they face."
Guterres also reiterated his support for the Iraqi government's efforts to bring Iraqi refugees back to their country and expressed hope that with democratic institutions, Iraq will have a future of peace and prosperity. The UN Secretary-General will meet Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and representatives of groups defending the rights of women and youth.
He will also visit the refugee camp in northern Iraq on Thursday and then travel to Erbil to meet with representatives of Iraq's Kurdistan Region.
Guterres will then travel to Qatar to attend the Least Developed Countries (LDC) meeting.
