UNHCR: Refugees in West and Central Africa reach 14 million

UNHCR's High Commissioner for West and Central Africa, Abdouraouf Gnon-Konde, has told reporters in Abidjan that the number has risen from 6.5 million refugees in 2019 to 13.7 million this year.

UNHCR's High Commissioner for West and Central Africa, Abdouraouf Gnon-Konde, has told reporters in Abidjan that the number has risen from 6.5 million refugees in 2019 to 13.7 million this year.

Gnon-Konde has said that by the end of this year, that number may increase to between 14 and 15 million people.

However, the High Commissioner of UNHCR, that number does not include the Democratic Republic of Congo, where UNHCR estimates that around seven million people have been forced to leave their homes.

Due to the fact that many people who fled their homes have been unable to return home for decades, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has urged the countries that host these refugees to include them in their development plans.

 

Refugees are an important and large part of the human society in the world today. The most recent statistics show that, right now there are more than 82 million refugees in different corners of the world. That number makes up more than one percent of the world's population and is equal to the population of one of the largest countries in the world.

In general, there are three types of refugee communities in the world. Internal refugees who have been forced to flee their homes due to various reasons. The number of internal refugees according to United Nations statistics is 48 million people.
