US Press: NATO has ignored Kiev's attempt to join

NATO admits it cannot yet satisfy the Ukrainian application for membership. The Financial Times newspaper writes it, quoting anonymous diplomats from the countries of the alliance."The letter with the question is on the table, but we are ignoring it," writes the newspaper, quoting one of its interlocutors.

"We won't be able to offer them membership in the near future. But we can talk about closer relations between NATO and Ukraine," said another source, adding that the military bloc is now experiencing a major shortage of funding. According to the Financial Times, this situation is causing growing irritation among Ukrainian officials.

"At the NATO summit, we want to get results. We don't just need a statement on the open door policy. We want to get something with specific guarantees. I mean reliable guarantees, not assurances, agreements, security measures. And we expect to receive a response to our official application for NATO membership," Andriy Sibiga, deputy head of the office of the president of Ukraine, told the newspaper.

NATO foreign ministers will meet in Brussels today to accept Finland into the alliance and discuss a multi-year program of support for Ukraine. According to the newspaper, it is planned to consider not only the issues of financial assistance, but also possible alternatives for Ukraine's accession to NATO.
